My Experience with Dopod P800w Pocket PC Phone (GPS)

You might find this review a bit different from other Dopod P800w reviews out there because I decided to concentrate more on Dopod P800w as a development platform rather a general review of the PDA itself.
Dopod P800w is one of the latest Dopod PDA phone products that come with built-in GPS receiver. The device itself comes with Mapking 12 navigation software and maps around the region. Powered with Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.1, the device supports GPS management interface to all GPS-aware application installed on the PDA.
J2ME / JavaME support
The device supports Java mobile application by default through Tao-Group's Intent Midlet Manager which provides MIDP 2.0/CLD C 1.1 application support to Dopod P800w.
Optional APIs included with Dopod P800w are :
- JSR 120 WMA - Wireless Messaging
- JSR 135 MMAPI - Mobile Media
- JSR 82 Java APIs for Bluetooth
However, my personal testing reveals that the default Midlet Manager only support up to 64KB Jar file size, well below the limit of most Java-enabled Nokia and Sony-Ericsson phones.
Another funny thing that I discover is, Dopod P800w midlet environment does not support JSR-75 Optional PDA api package which it suppose to support since it is a PDA phone, something that my Nokia 6630 able to support flawlessly. This means you wont be able to write application which able to access local filesystem or phone book on this PDA.
The Mobile Media API is also limited as it can't access the PDA built-in camera, making it pretty useless for running and building moblog (mobile blogging) client.
Intent Midlet Manager Stylus Input Bug
I found an annoying bug with Intent Midlet Manager while trying to write input to Textfield/Textbox on a running Java application. The online keyboard/block recognizer interface seems to block the lower half of midlet application interface, I can't see what I write on the Textfield without turning off the Online Keyboard/Block recogniser. While this bug does not impair midlet usage directly, it does annoy me whenever I've to fill up textfields located in the lower half of the midlet application.
.NET Compact Framework
Dopod P800w comes with Microsoft .NET Compact Framework release 2.0.5238, which by far able to support all current .NET application for Pocket PC. The best part is, the device is able to run my custom made .NET application which accesses GPS information directly.
This means I can experiment with GPS application development easily with this device :)
Upon further testing, all of my favorite .NET Compact Framework application is able to run on Dopod P800w including one that access camera and bluetooth device, which is cool since I can use it as my primary .NET application testing device.
Other Features
Beside Mapking 12 car navigation application, Dopod P800w comes with standard Windows Mobile 5.1 application suite that includes :
- Windows Mobile Media Player 10
- Powerpoint Mobile,Word Mobile, Excel Mobile
- Touchscreen phone keypad (which reminds me of Apple iPhone)
- QuickGPS
- FM Radio application
- Adobe Reader Light Edition (for reading PDF files)
- Bluetooth Explorer
Connectivity
Dopod p800w supports connectivity through
- WAP over GPRS (GPRS)
- EDGE
- WiFi 802.11b/g
- Bluetooth
Conclusion
Overall, Dopod P800w is a great Pocket PC PDA that you can have at a very reasonable price. Its slim design and built-in GPS receiver makes it perfect as a navigation device when travelling. Priced at around RM2500 (USD750), Dopod P800w makes great gift for geeks as it supports both Java midlet and .NET Compact Framework 2.0 application.

Your review is very wonderful. Among what you described, I noticed “The best part is, the device is able to run my custom made .NET application which accesses GPS information directly. This means I can experiment with GPS application development easily with this device”. I am very intetested in the programable ability of GPS access of Dopod 800W. Could you tell me if this device provides any .NET api to access location information provided by the GPS receiver?
Thanks!
